Traditionally, matching the hatch was considered the essence or 'art' of Fly Fishing. But this can be difficult & frustrating. An indepth understanding of all insects & their lifecycle would be a great skill to have, but this takes time & experience. Well, thanks to Paul Buchanan, who does have a greater understanding of fresh water entomology, we've come up with 'match the hatch' fly packs to help revive the art, aid in your own expanding knowledge, make fishing even more enjoyable & of course help you to catch more fish! Included in these packs is a guide on how to recognise what is hatching on the water & the most effective way to fish these flies!
Un Match the Hatch
Yes, sometimes in order to catch more fish, you actually have to un match the hatch! Well no one could ever claim that 'catching' was exactly easy! The more you learn about matching the hatch, teaches you that sometimes the water surface is just so absolutely covered in such an abundance of various species of insects, that there's no way to tell for sure what the fish are feeding on. What chance is there of a fish opting for you cast of flies out of all the thousands zooming about? This is when it's up to you to get your quarry's attention! The fly you choose in this instance has to stand out. This is when we add 'tags' or 'hot spots' to our flies. Usually a flash of red but flourescent orange, green or yellow can also be as effective or simply using a differen't retrieve to make it stand out is all that is needed!
These are a few of the popular hot spot flies & lures for when you need to distract the fish!
